It’s hard to believe we’re already halfway through 2026. As we enjoy summer and the excitement of the World Cup in our state, it’s also a great time to reflect on the progress APA Washington has made so far on its 2026 Work Program.

Looking for Auction Item Donations for the Chapter’s Fall ’26 Student Scholarship Fundraising Event

The Student Scholarship Silent Auction is scheduled for Thursday, October 8, 2026, in conjunction with the annual conference’s reception. This fundraising event will benefit students at Washington's three Planning Advisory Board (PA)-accredited planning universities.

Professional Development News

The registration window for the 2026 “Standard” AICP Exam closes on August 31. You will need to take the exam by September 30.  

There is also a “Special Pilot” Exam that is being offered with a different registration deadline and test-taking window.  This exam is the first administration of an updated AICP exam and has different requirements – see the One Path to AICP page for those specifics.

Continuing Education Opportunities – July and

Commerce Now Accepting Applications for Local Permit Review Grants — Due July 31, 2026

The Washington State Department of Commerce is now accepting applications for its Permit Review Process Update Grants, a competitive funding opportunity aimed at helping local governments modernize and streamline their development review processes.

Youth Commissions: Empowering the Next Generation to Shape Their Communities

Young people will experience the greatest impacts of planning decisions made today. Planners can ensure youth voices are integrated into their local government processes. Across Washington state, many communities empower their youth through youth commissions.
