House Bill 1293 - “Streamlining Development Regulations”  

This act streamlines housing development regulations and prevents governments from using vague, arbitrary guidelines in design reviews. These guidelines have been used to block the passage of construction projects, such as affordable housing, that are needed but stigmatized and disliked by neighboring property owners and other stakeholders.

Legislative Briefing Summary | HB 1042 - “Concerning the use of existing buildings for residential purposes” 

This act allows for the creation of housing units in existing buildings, particularly those that are zoned commercial or mixed use. This allows for more housing, in desperate need across the state, in areas where there is limited use of commercial space and unused buildings that could be a source of blight.

Dept. of Commerce Periodic Update Workshop

2025 Periodic Update Workshop Series 

Register now for our second climate workshop!
When: Thursday, October 19, 2023, from 10:00 am – 12:00 pm

Commerce is partnering with the Thurston Regional Planning Council and the Municipal Research and Services Center (MRSC) to bring you workshops that support jurisdictions with periodic updates due in 2025, as required under RCW 36.70A.130. This will be the second of two climate-focused workshops in the 2025 series.
