CELEBRATING 25 YEARS! Washington’s Growth Management Act (GMA) was adopted in 1990 by a coalition of dedicated state legislators and citizen groups that were determined to do something about the rapid, unplanned, disconnected, and unsustainable growth that took place in our state during the 1970s and 80s.
The 25th anniversary of this game-changing legislation presents an opportunity to evaluate the impact of GMA, applaud our successes and leaders, and ask ourselves some tough questions:
- How well have we achieved the goals of GMA?
- What could we have done differently?
- What are the success stories?
It is also an opportunity to look forward to the next 25 years and discuss the challenges ahead – climate change, public health, social equity – and what changes are needed now for us to successfully address them.
Hear from GMA Founders and Current Leaders in Washington Listen to two inspiring panels – one looking back at the record of successful and not-so-successful efforts to implement GMA, and one considering the future work to be done to meet the goals of protecting our unique natural environment, improving our economy, and ensuring the livability of our communities.
Then join the leaders of our profession for dinner and beverages as we celebrate some of the very best projects and plans!
Who should attend? Planners, policy makers, partner organizations, students, and others involved in implementing Washington’s Growth Management Act – past, present and future.
