Thank you for Making the Student Scholarship Auction a Success!

By Steve Butler, FAICP

The Chapter’s Student Scholarship Auction event took place on October 17 at the 2024 APA Washington Chapter’s Annual Conference in Bellevue. The purpose of this event was to raise funds for students enrolled in one of Washington's accredited planning educational programs. I am happy to report that the auction met the fundraising target of $7,500, and more donations are coming in!

An event like the Student Scholarship Auction takes a lot of people to organize, contribute, and run it, and I would like to acknowledge and thank them as follows:

A. Donors of Live Auction Item

A big thank you to those individuals who donated items for the live auction:

  • Michael Cardwell – Painting, Pendleton blanket, and Gallery Booklets signed by Artist Preston Singletary
  • Esther Larsen – Four-night stay at the WorldMark Resort in Seaside, Oregon
  • Joe Tovar – Whale Watching Tour for Two
  • Kell Rowen Half – Day Sailboat Trip in the South Sound
  • Chad Eiken & Brian Carrico – Flyfishing Lessons at a premier “fly-fishing only” lake

B. Donors to the Student Scholarship Fund

A HUGE “round of applause” for those people who donated to the Chapter’s Student Scholarship Fund! If you haven’t yet had the opportunity to donate, I would encourage you to do so by clicking on the following link:

C. Volunteers and Chapter Staff

I would like to thank the Chapter’s ad hoc Student Scholarship Auction Committee, which was comprised of Ben Braudrick, Steve Butler, Esther Larsen, Keith McClelland, Robin McClelland, Kirk Rappe, and Joe Tovar. Many thanks go out to the volunteer co-auctioneers, Keith McClelland and Joe Tovar, who did a superb job, and the three former scholarship recipients who provided compelling testimonies about the importance of the Chapter’s scholarship program – Mary Reinbold, Samara Ressler, and Ciara Riordan . I also want to express my appreciation to Nancy Eklund and Emil King, the Conference Co-Chair, and acknowledge the support of the APA Washington Chapter’s Board of Directors.

In addition, many thanks to the “day-of-event” people who helped carry off the auction, including the student volunteers from WWU and EWU; the Meydenbauer Center AV staff; and the APA Washington Chapter’s conference and administrative staff.

This year’s Auction was a positive experience that raised a lot of money for planning student scholarships in Washington. I hope to see you at next year’s Student Scholarship Auction. Thank you again for your generosity and support in planning student scholarships!
