Apply for a One-Month Fellowship in Italy

The Civita Institute’s 2024 fellowship application period is now open, with applications due by February 2, 2024. Fellowship recipients will receive a stipend and housing for one month in one of the Institute’s residential apartments, located in the historic Italian hill town of Civita di Bagnoregio.

The Civita Institute seeks to inspire creative excellence, education, and cultural exchange through exploration of the unique qualities of Italian hill towns. Its historic arts and architecture-focused facilities are located in Civita di Bagnoregio, one of the most beautiful hill towns in Italy. The Civita Institute was founded on the idea that architecture and preservation, environmental stewardship, agricultural heritage, and cultural exchange are all linked and that Civita, and other hill towns of Italy, provide a unique setting to experience these connections.

Civita Institute Fellows are typically involved in the disciplines of architecture, planning, design, art, and literature but all programs are open to other professional pursuits. The fellowship program provides a unique opportunity for recipients to undertake a project of their own choosing in Civita di Bagnoregio’s unique setting, far from routine obligations. Planners from Washington State who have been Civita Institute Fellows include Steve Butler (Planning & Policy Manager, MRSC) and Kristian Kofoed (retired, former Senior Urban Planner, City of Seattle).

Located 75 miles north of Rome, the historic Civita Institute facilities provide a unique basecamp for program participants to explore dozens of significant hill towns, cities, and cultural sites between Rome and Florence. Situated in the ancient hill town of Civita di Bagnoregio, the facilities of the Civita Institute are located within the pedestrian-only, historic town that is accessed via footbridge. The town is well-known for its surrounding natural beauty, its intact historical and architectural splendor, its central piazza, historic church, geological museum, and local shops. The Civita Institute provides a small studio workspace, an excellent architectural library, and private residential accommodations with small kitchens, plus a large, breath-taking garden and smaller communal courtyard spaces.
