About the Tour

Join us for a walking tour of Spokane’s South University District (SUD) - a dynamic crossroads for innovation, commerce, and industry amidst a diverse residential neighborhood.

The SUD is home to many small local businesses and a combination of commercial, light industry, and historic buildings. The SUD is part of the larger Spokane University District - a tax increment financing (TIF) and innovation district that has two oversight bodies that contribute to planning for the district - The University District Development Association and the University District Public Development Authority. With its proximity to five major universities, and two medical school programs, and national recognition as a smart city testbed and burgeoning life sciences sector - the SUD is an evolving district poised to become a testbed for innovation-focused urban design and development.

During our tour we will explore the recent projects that have shaped the SUD like the University Gateway Pedestrian Bridge and the zero-carbon, zero-energy Catalyst Building. We will discuss new opportunities and challenges for the district including adaptive reuse of existing historic buildings, small business incubation, and connection to the life science and higher education ecosystems that are thriving nearby. Through conversations with local business owners, SUD staff, planners, and urban designers, we will explore the impact amenities like parks, public plazas, and streetscape improvements could have on future development in the SUD and how these amenities could build a more 24/7-based, vibrant, diverse neighborhood.

Things to note:

  • Meet at Ignite NW Building, 120 N Pine St, Ste 252
