Washington’s Legislative Session Begins January 14, 2019
In anticipation of the beginning of the Legislative Session on January 14, 2019, the Legislative Committee (LC) of the Washington Chapter of the American Planning Association will begin its annual advocacy work program with its first weekly conference call on January 11, 2019, at 12 noon. A weekly notice of meeting times will be posted on the committee’s Basecamp Project (our online collaboration tool).
The Legislative Committee sends LEAD (Legislative Education, Advocacy, and Direction) updates periodically by email during the legislative session with information about the committee’s work, interesting bills, and calls for action.
In the meantime, the Legislature’s website has a listing of pre-filed bills, and the LC welcomes input from the chapter membership on legislative issues. Chapter members who have not joined the LC and who would like to sign up to participate in reviewing bills, making position recommendations and/or are interested in advocating on behalf of the chapter should contact the LC Co-Chairs Yorik Stevens-Wajda and Esther Larsen.
Among the resources the LC will rely upon as guidance when reviewing bills during the session is the 2019 Legislative Agenda, which was approved by the Chapter’s Board of Directors at its October 3, 2018 meeting. Thanks to those who participated in its development and provided input.
The Legislative Committee’s website has additional information regarding the committee and its work programs, and with the fresh start of a new biennium comes the opportunity to begin, renew or continue participating in shaping the legislative issue that impact planning and our communities.
