Western Washington University - Urban Planning Program

Nicholas Zaferatos, PhD, AICP
Program Director, Urban Planning and Sustainable Development
Huxley College of the Environment, WWU

Huxley College of the Environment’s BA in Urban Planning and Sustainable Development (UPSD) program is undergoing an accreditation review this year following its first program accreditation that took place four years ago. The program has been active in updating its strategic plan, diversity strategy and self-study report. A PAB site visit team will be meeting with students, faculty, administrators, area employers and the professional planning community to evaluate the program between February 24–26.

We invite APA members and our alumni to attend the site visit session scheduled for 3:45–5:00 PM on Monday, February 24. The meeting will be held in the Huxley College conference room 536 in the Environmental Studies Center building. The session is intended for area employers, APA chapter members, alumni, and our program’s advisory members.

If you are a Huxley Urban Planning alumni and cannot attend the meeting, we would welcome a letter of support for program accreditation. Letters should be address to Dean Steve Hollenhorst, Huxley College of the Environment, WWU, 516 High Street, Bellingham, WA. 98225.

For more information about the UPSD program, we invite you to visit our program website at: https://huxley.wwu.edu/urban-planning-and-sustainable-development-program.

The College is also contemplating the creation of a new department at Huxley College that would focus on applied and professional programs. The tentative name for the new department is Urban Planning and Environmental Management. More news on this as we progress the conversation.

If you plan to attend the PAB site review session, please drop me an email at [email protected] so we can provide you with on campus parking information.
