Sustainable Washington3.7 Project Example #3Action: Local Food Processing
The Center for Local-Self Reliance is a newly-formed non-profit that teaches gardening, food preservation, seed saving, medicinal plant preparation, and other self reliance skills. The organization’s work is partially supported through a partnership with the City of Bellingham’s Parks and Recreation staff. In 2008, the city granted the Center for Local-Self Reliance a long-term lease on a building, the Caretaker’s House and grounds, allowing for necessary space to carry out their mission. As of 2009, The Center for Self-Reliance is planning to renovate the property to include a commercial kitchen as well as demonstration gardens.
