Happy Fourth of July! Whether you're looking to deepen your knowledge or stay updated on the latest trends and best practices, these trainings offer invaluable insights to propel your career forward and stay ahead of AICP requirements:

  1. From NIMBY to Not Impossible, Maybe, Better Yet
  • Date: July 19th, 2024
  • Time: 10AM PT
  • Description: Triggers to “Not in My Back Yard” are often rooted in fear. Fear of loss of quality of life, property values, environmental degradation, health effects, or distrust in technology, government, and management. Other triggers can be ideology or impacts on symbolic places. NIMBY-ism is not simply a U.S. phenomenon, it happens everywhere. Research from around the world reveals useful techniques for anticipating NIMBY arguments, improving systems to avoid triggers, and recognition of the importance of local political cultures where “we are in this together” versus “everyone for themselves”. • Date: On-Demand
  • Description: In communities of color, a bedrock institution is the black church. Many of these institutions have grand visions for their blocks, neighborhoods, and communities, but need help in making their vision a reality. This session will dive into the planning process of the Washington Shores Vision Plan and the role the black church played in organizing members of the community, engaging in the planning process with city staff, and implementing elements of the plan to revitalize the community. (Hosted by the APA Florida Chapter)

Other Trainings of Interest this Month-

  1. How to Recognize and Respond to First Amendment “Audits”
  • Date: July 16, 2024
  • Time: 10AM PT
  • Description: Washington local governments have been experiencing so-called “First Amendment audits,” where private individuals unexpectedly arrive at an agency office building and begin recording their interaction with officials and staff. The intent of these “audits” is to test how the agency responds to the asserted First Amendment rights of the auditor, which can be challenging to deal with appropriately in the moment. This webinar, offered in partnership with Washington Cities Insurance Authority (WCIA), will prepare local government staff and officials on how to best address First Amendment auditors when they arrive at your agency’s front counter or your public meeting. It will cover the auditors’ legal rights, control measures local governments can implement, and de-escalation techniques staff can utilize if the situation becomes contentious. (Hosted by the Municipal Research and Services Center)
