President's Message

Chapter President | Yorik Stevens-Wajda, AICP
August 2022

It's been a hot summer in the northwest, and now that October is approaching, things are really heating up in the chapter's virtual office. It's not corn mazes that has us so excited, or even community planning month (although that's exciting too). October 11-13 is the APA-WA Chapter Conference in Vancouver, live and direct for the first time since we gathered in the city of destiny in 2019.

The conference committee has been working hard all summer and is now putting the finishing touches on the program, thinking through the details, and watching the registration numbers climb. I signed up and bought my train tickets this week. The process was smooth and the conference is a bargain at $340 as long as you register this week (through Aug. 19). Read more in this newsletter about the conference from conference committee chair Chad Eiken, AICP, and please join us in October.

Once you're done registering for the conference, make sure to vote in the APA consolidated elections through Aug. 20. If you didn't get a ballot via email, reach out to [email protected] or call 312-786-6372.

Finally, if know of a planner who has made a difference in your workplace, in your community, or for the chapter, please reach out to me at [email protected]. Through August I'll be considering nominees for several awards to be presented at the conference awards lunch on Oct 12 (followed by our annual chapter membership meeting):
  • The Barbara Grace Award for a distinguished mid-level planner
  • The Myer Wolfe Award for professional achievement and advancement of the planning profession
  • The Robert "Bob" Burke Award for service to the APA Washington Chapter
  • The Eric R. Shields Award for leadership
  • Legislator of the year.
Excellent planning projects from around the state will also be feted at the awards ceremony via the joint APA/PAW Awards for Excellence in Planning.
