Western Washington University selects student to receive 2021 APA Washington Scholarship
Kirk Rappe, AICP | Scholarship Committee
The APA Washington Scholarship Committee is pleased to announce that Western Washington University selected an undergraduate student, Malene Garcia, to receive one of the APA Washington’s 2021 scholarship awards. Malene is an APA member and is expected to complete her course of study in Urban Planning and Sustainable Development next quarter after studying abroad in Spain.
Last fall, Malene spent time working with the Columbia Valley Parks and Recreation District in Whatcom County to introduce public parks and open spaces to Columbia Valley communities. She identified key stakeholders, developed a survey and interview questions, interviewed stakeholders, and presented her findings and recommendations to the CVPRD board on what types of parks and facilities are preferred. Her work and key stakeholder information helped pass a park's levy.
In addition to urban planning, Malene pursued a minor in environmental policy and environmental justice, and an honors interdisciplinary studies minor through the honors college. She wants to develop a career in environmental planning and work towards equity for residents in cities, ensuring opportunity for people who don’t have it. Ideally, she sees herself working on affordable housing issues.
The APA Washington Chapter congratulates Malene and wishes her the best as she starts out on her career. The scholarship committee will profile the 2021 UW and EWU recipients in future articles.
