Consultant Self-driving cars, electrification, and shared mobility are usually discussed in the context of “smart cities.” But autonomous vehicles stopping at the big-city line will not be popular. Patchy connectivity and a lack of preparation and awareness among planners and policy makers in small town and suburban America threaten to create a drag on the success of the AV transition, and risks exacerbating the growing city/rural digital and economic divide. That’s bad for the AV industry – and bad for the people living in small towns and rural municipalities.
