Job Description:

The City of Tacoma Public Works Department is looking for a Senior Planner to join the traffic engineering and transportation planning group. This group is responsible for planning, coordinating, and design support for complex transportation planning, traffic engineering, and capital improvement projects. The successful applicant will work closely with internal staff (planning, engineering, and sustainability), external agencies, and advocacy groups to implement transportation goals and policies outlined in the Transportation Master Plan, as well as current City initiatives and priorities.

The ideal candidate will understand planning principles, current practices, information sources and trends in the field of planning. They will have experience in other areas of transportation and project management, including traffic safety planning, right-of-way design, and grant funding. The candidate will be hard-working and approachable, culturally competent, and will be able to organize and express ideas through excellent oral and written communication to a wide variety of audiences. The candidate will be able to manage and prioritize multiple tasks in a timely manner and continually look for innovative and creative process improvements that generate more consistent and transparent outcomes.

Job Duties:

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Lead long-range transportation planning efforts, including updating the City's Transportation Master Plan and subarea plans throughout the City and conducting community engagement.
  • Oversee development of corridor studies and conceptual designs for capital improvement projects.
  • Support capital project programming and grant applications. Track performance measures.
  • Contribute to development of new regulations and codes that support the City's adopted policies.
  • Develop and implement the City's first Impact Fee and Vision Zero programs. Collaborate with various departments and agencies to discuss and implement policies and programs that support the City's transportation goals, including impact fees, affordable housing, active transportation, and safe routes to schools.
  • Serve as a liaison and provide support to the City’s Transportation Committee.
  • Represent the City at various community meetings and at stakeholder committees including the City's Bicycle and Pedestrian Technical Advisory Group and Planning Commission.
  • Support funding requests and grant applications by identifying and advancing projects that meet the City's transportation goals and objectives. Lead and/or supervise various groups to support projects, including internal staff and external consultants.
  • Build and maintain an innovative network of key partners across sectors such as governments, industry, businesses, utilities, and academia to support sustainable infrastructure practices in Tacoma, as part of a sustainable transportation strategy.

Experience/Qualifications/Knowledge/Skills:

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS (TRAINING AND EDUCATION):

Four-year college degree in urban planning, transportation planning, urban design, engineering, environmental affairs, public administration or related fields.

AND

Two years providing transportation planning services to a local agency

Education and experience can be substituted equivalently.

LICENSING, CERTIFICATIONS AND OTHER LEGAL REQUIREMENTS:

Washington State Driver License at time of appointment to the position.
