Employer: City of Tacoma Job Description: The City of Tacoma Public Works Department is looking for a Senior Planner to join the traffic engineering and transportation planning group. This group is responsible for planning, coordinating, and design support for complex transportation planning, traffic engineering, and capital improvement projects. The successful applicant will work closely with internal staff (planning, engineering, and sustainability), external agencies, and advocacy groups to implement transportation goals and policies outlined in the Transportation Master Plan, as well as current City initiatives and priorities. Tacoma is a sustainable community with many diverse residents, businesses, and visitors who have various transportation priorities. The City is strategic in how it plans its transportation system with an emphasis on carrying the people and goods that foster Tacoma’s culture, character, and competitiveness. The transportation system offers multimodal travel options that provide safe access for all users and neighborhoods, encourage healthy living, and protect the environment. The ideal candidate will understand planning principles, current practices, information sources and trends in the field of planning. They will have experience in other areas of transportation and project management, including traffic safety planning, right-of-way design, and grant funding. The candidate will be hard-working and approachable, culturally competent, and will be able to organize and express ideas through excellent oral and written communication to a wide variety of audiences. The candidate will be able to manage and prioritize multiple tasks in a timely manner and continually look for innovative and creative process improvements that generate more consistent and transparent outcomes. Experience/Qualifications/Knowledge/Skills: DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS (TRAINING AND EDUCATION): Four-year college degree in urban planning, transportation planning, urban design, engineering, environmental affairs, public administration or related fields. AND Two years providing transportation planning services to a local agency Education and experience can be substituted equivalently.
