Your Opportunity:

Stantec is seeking a Land Use Planner / Urban Designer to join our National Brownfields Team with project focus in the Western United States. The position may operate from our Bellevue, Lynnwood, or Portland office based on the ideal applicant’s location. The position will report to our Planning Lead and work with other local and remote technical teams. Stantec allows flexible work locations and hours. Stantec's Washington and Oregon offices are seeking a well-rounded Land Use Planner / Urban Designer to conduct area-wide planning studies for our public-sector clients across the Western United States. The area-wide planning studies focus on redevelopment strategies to bring positive change to communities that have a concentration of brownfield sites. These planning studies normally include public engagement, existing conditions analysis, conceptual planning, market analysis, brownfield data review, and an implementation plan.

We’re actively looking for a Land Use Planner / Urban Designer to co-manage planning tasks. This position requires strong skills as a self-starter, with ability to participate on multiple projects simultaneously. We will provide you with the tools, resources, and support staff to complete these planning tasks. Experience within redevelopment and economic development projects is a plus. This role will also include support to project managers for contracts, reporting, and scheduling.

Job Duties:

Your Key Responsibilities

  • Be a key planner on Stantec’s National Brownfields Team, with a primary focus on clients and projects throughout our Northwest Region (Washington, Oregon, Alaska, and Idaho), California, Utah, and Nevada;
  • Co-manage area-wide planning projects that address multiple brownfields and create redevelopment strategies for local communities;
  • Develop and implement public engagement plans as part of the area-wide planning projects. Create communication graphics for public and stakeholder meetings;
  • Conduct existing conditions analysis that examines current zoning, land use, utilities, natural resources, transportation, and community character;
  • Assist communities and project teams to complete brownfield inventories and prioritization of redevelopment projects for brownfield sites;
  • Review and summarize brownfield conditions based on other’s inventories, Phase I/II environmental site assessment reports, and field notes;
  • Create conceptual plans and/or project exhibits that graphically communicate planning options for specific sites and/or study areas;
  • Coordinate with other Stantec teams, subconsultants, clients, and government agencies to obtain information pertaining to the area-wide planning components;
  • Create final area-wide planning reports that summarize the process, findings, alternatives, public feedback, and recommendations. Write report text, create maps/exhibits, and layout the document using desktop publishing software;
  • Assist with technical proposals and participate in business development with existing clients and identified leads. Maintain client relationships that generate repeat business;
  • Build strong collaborative relationships with Stantec employees, clients, and subcontractors

Experience/Qualifications/Knowledge/Skills:

Your Capabilities and Credentials

  • Ability to work with a diverse team of professionals in environmental sciences, engineering, architecture, planning, GIS, etc.
  • Strong written/verbal communication and organization/analytical skills.
  • Strong commitment to safety, including following established Health & Safety protocols.
  • Ability to multi-task, maintain flexibility, travel and work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Local (Washington & Oregon) candidates preferred.
  • Ability and willingness to travel to project sites and clients in the Western United States (up to 10% of your monthly schedule);
  • Prior to employment with Stantec, you will be required to successfully pass a physical and drug/alcohol screening;
  • Demonstrate a good driving record and a valid driver’s license;
  • Knowledge of Washington, Oregon, and Federal regulations and policies regarding site assessment, remediation, and redevelopment;
  • Experience with developing small area plans, master plans, and redevelopment strategy reports;
  • Knowledge of market research, policy development, Washington and Oregon land use policy, and urban design principles;•Experience working with diverse stakeholder groups including local government staff and elected officials, developers, property owners, advocacy groups, community leaders, and the general public;
  • Experience implementing projects funded by state/federal grant programs;
  • Experience co-managing complex multi-year projects;
  • Experience working with communities of all sizes and scales, from rural counties to dense urban centers;
  • Proficiency in word processing and document layout software (e.g., Microsoft Word and Adobe InDesign);•Proficiency in graphic design software (e.g., Adobe Creative Suite);
  • Basic knowledge of geographic information system software (e.g., ArcGIS);
  • Basic knowledge of autocad or similar design software.Education and ExperienceBachelor’s in urban planning, landscape architecture or related discipline. Masters and AICP or PLA Designations preferred. At least 5 years’ experience leading or co-managing a variety of community planning and redevelopment projects in the Western United States with a least 1 year working with brownfield sites.
